BEACON OPEN STUDIOS: Power in Numbers

Reception: Friday, February 13th 6-9pm

Gallery hours:  Saturday, February 14th 12-6pm and Sunday, February 15th 12-6pm

The Yard, 4 Hanna Lane, Beacon, NY 12508

Beacon Open Studios is hosting its 4th annual Winter Weekend Event. This year's curated group show Power in Numbers is about unity, compassion and fellowship. We wanted our participating artists to feel the might of seeing their statement echoed and know they are not alone in their message or their action.

This year’s application came with a plus-one.

Along with their submitted work, we asked that applicants include a piece by someone else. We encouraged them to reach out to artists they admired, strangers or friends. If their work was selected for the show, the “plus-one” received an automatic entry.

In some cases “plus-one” works share contextual, thematic, or aesthetic similarities, and other pieces were chosen based on the personal relationship between the creators.

We hope the show encourages you to extend a hand, and bring someone else into the room.

As part of the exhibition, Beacon-based dance and movement artist Skyla Schreter will be directing a series of movement activations in the gallery in response to 4 selected pairs of submitted work and 2 individual pieces.

Friday 2/13  | Movement Installations | 7pm & 8pm

During the opening  reception, Skyla Schreter, Beacon-based choreographer and movement director will perform two solo movement installations in the gallery. “body: keeper of light” will be performed in relation with Laura Bochet’s painting “Devotion 1” at 7pm, and “body: keeper of time” will be performed in physical dialogue with Michelle Silver’s “To Own A Body” at 8pm.

Both performances will last approximately 10 minutes each and will only be performed once.

Saturday 2/14   |   Dual Movement Activations | 2pm, 3pm, 4pm & 5pm

In a series of dual movement activations directed by Skyla, a network of movement connections will form with 4 pairs of chosen works from the group show throughout the course of the gallery open hours. In each movement session, Skyla will be joined by a local dancer who will respond to the selected work with their own movement interpretation. This will be followed by a second movement improvisation by Skyla, using the first dancers movement as base inspiration, then layering material pulled from the second artwork in the selected source pair— completing the circle; activating and uniting the four artists’ voices—visual and physical—for a fleeting moment in the gallery.

Saturday Movement Activations will be approximately 10 minutes long, and will occur in view of the selected artworks, beginning on the hour from 2-5pm.

Skyla will be joined by dancers Kristina Desjardins (2pm) Jesse Carrey-Chan (3pm) Jesse Dae Christ (4pm) and Kristina Diaz (5pm.)

Music curation by Aaron Sanders.
